Key findings

  • Small owner-run businesses lead. barbers (54.6%), nail salons (45.0%), pet groomers (42.6%) and beauty salons (42.3%) have the highest shares of listings with no website. These are mostly small, owner-run businesses that win customers through walk-ins, booking apps and social media.
  • The biggest pools are in everyday local businesses. By number, beauty salons (24,230), restaurants (22,572) and cafés (17,786) account for the most no-website listings.
  • Most no-website businesses can still be reached. 88.4% of listings without a website include a phone number, and a further 19,663 businesses link only to a social profile, booking app or directory page instead of a website of their own.
  • The share varies by city. Within 5 miles of the centre, Hull has the highest share of the 30 cities we measured (27.8%) and Cambridge the lowest (14.0%).
  • Trades are under-counted in open map data. Plumbers, electricians and builders have low no-website shares. Many tradespeople work from home or a van without a public listing, so open map data holds relatively few of them, and the ones it holds are more likely to have a website. Treat trade figures as a floor, not a census.

“With phone” is the share of no-website listings that include a phone number. Categories can overlap (a pizza shop can be both a restaurant and a takeaway), so the rows add up to more than the 706,013 businesses counted once in the total.

City centres come from GeoNames, the same gazetteer the scanner uses for town names. A 5-mile circle covers a different share of each city, so compare shares rather than raw counts between cities of different sizes.

How we measured it

The figures come from the same business listings a NoSite Leads scan searches: the Overture Maps Foundation places dataset, release 2026-09-23.1, which combines listings from Meta, Microsoft, Foursquare and other sources. We counted UK listings (2,578,654 in total) and kept the 706,013 that fall into the scanner's 36 local business categories.

  • Listings below the dataset's confidence threshold of 0.3, or marked permanently closed, are excluded.
  • Chain outlets without their own website are excluded: branded franchise branches, cash machines, lockers and similar.
  • Duplicate listings for the same business at the same location are counted once.
  • No website listed means the listing has no website link. Social, booking or directory link only means the only link is a page such as Facebook, Instagram, Booksy, Fresha, Just Eat or Yell.

“No website listed” describes the listing, not the business. Some of these businesses do have a website that isn't linked from their listing, and open map data covers some trades better than others. Read the guide to finding businesses without websites for how to verify a listing before contacting the business, and the data and provider notes for how each status is defined.
